The Tradition of Health

The therapeutic properties of the thermal springs of Acireale have been known since antiquity and had already been taken advantage of by the Greeks. The ancient thermal baths of Santa Venera al Pozzo, in proximity to the outlet of a sulphurous water spring originating from Etna, was built in the first century B.C. In the middle Ages it was believed that the beneficial virtues of the water derived from the spilt blood of the female saint of the city, the martyr ‘Venera’. In the 1873 was the foundation of the new Terme Santa Venera and the inauguration of the nearby Grand Hotel Des Bains, which went on to accommodate illustrious personages such as Wagner, King Umberto and Queen Margherita. In the 1987 the new thermal baths of Santa Caterina were inaugurated, immersed in an area rich with citrus groves.

The water of well-being

The therapeutic instrument of the ‘Terme’ is the very slightly radioactive salsobromoiodica (bromide salt) sulphurous water, characterized by the presence of sulphur in a particular chemical combination. The mud used in the treatments is of vegetable-mineral origin: it is obtained by the 3 year maturation of volcanic clay in the sulphurous water that gushes out of the Greco-roman spring of Santa Venera Saint al Pozzo, until it becomes rich with the superficial sulphurous micro flora.

Therapies

For rheumatic and osteoarticular (joint) afflictions, and for ear, nose and throat or respiratory disorders, the thermal waters of Acireale are employed by means of mud, baths and inhalations.
Annexed to the fangobalneoterapia (balneotherapy) unit there is the dermoestetica centre that offers well-being packages that use the deep action of the mud to cure skin disorders. Complimenting the thermal therapy unit is the fisiochinesi therapy unit. This unit is equipped with vanguard instruments for physical activity and has specialist orthopaedic and physiotherapy staff, who assist the principle physiotherapists and the clients. The outpatients' departments of angiology (viens) and dermatology are particularly well equipped for the treatment of specific pathologies like psoriasis, rosacea etc.

Well-being courses

The ‘Terme’ of Acireale proposes aesthetic treatments with “well-being courses” running from 1 to 6 days, inspiring the philosophy that animated the Terme at the time of the Romans:
“In the antique thermal buildings, in addition to the many various shape of bath, were gardens and paths for walks, arenas, rest halls and premises for massages: the ideal place to pass free time, pursuing the ideal rest or otium, presupposed indispensable for restoring the mind, the body and every other asset.”

The services offered with the well-being courses are numerous and, if you consistently take advantage of them, are in the position to give you amazing results.
